A membership announcement from Kai Home Care, serving Oʻahu families with non-medical support at home.

A local commitment, with room to keep learning

When a family invites a caregiver into the home, the details matter: the way someone likes their breakfast, a familiar routine, a conversation that should not be rushed. Thoughtful support starts with paying attention to the person receiving care.

It also takes a willingness to learn. As Kai grows, we want to stay connected to the people and organizations working to understand aging in Hawaiʻi. Joining HPGS is one way to make that commitment part of our work.

We are proud to become members of a community whose purpose speaks directly to why we started Kai: helping older adults continue to live with dignity, connection, and a voice in their own care.

What is HPGS?

The Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society brings together people from different fields who share an interest in aging. Its members include educators, caregivers, health and social service professionals, older adults, and community organizations. Its mission includes promoting understanding of aging and supporting dignity in later life. [1]

HPGS offers educational and networking opportunities, a newsletter, and a biennial conference. It also supports scholarships and tuition assistance for people pursuing or advancing their work in aging. [2]

That range of perspectives is part of its value to us. Everyday care sits within a wider community, and there is much to learn from people whose work approaches aging from another angle.

Why this matters to the families we serve

Families often have questions that reach beyond a caregiver’s hours. They may be thinking about changing routines, support for a family caregiver, or how different services fit together. A home care agency should listen carefully, explain its role, and recognize when a question belongs with another professional or organization.

We see HPGS membership as an opportunity to broaden our understanding of that larger picture. Learning alongside others can introduce new questions, useful resources, and different ways to think about the needs of older adults and the people supporting them.

For Kai, the purpose is practical: to keep asking what we can understand better and how that understanding might inform everyday support at home. The person receiving care remains at the center of that conversation.

How we hope to take part

As new members, we look forward to exploring HPGS’s educational opportunities, following its discussions, and getting to know others in Hawaiʻi’s aging community. We hope to learn from their experience and contribute thoughtfully as our own work develops.

We also value HPGS’s support for people building careers in aging. Preparing the next generation of professionals and helping current workers continue their education are worthwhile efforts for our community. [2]

Our membership is a beginning. We look forward to sharing more as we participate, with specific examples of what we learn and where we become involved.

An invitation to learn more

If you are caring for someone you love, planning for your own later years, or working with older adults, HPGS is an organization worth getting to know. Its website introduces its work and provides information about resources, events, and membership. [1]

We are pleased to be part of this community and to support its focus on Hawaiʻi’s kūpuna. At Kai, we want to carry that spirit of learning and respect into the relationships we build with families on Oʻahu.
