More about ShawnClose Shawn’s story

Why home care

In my work with clinicians and families, I saw how difficult it could be to find good support at home. It became personal when my mother struggled to find adequate home care after a long hospital stay.

Professional background

I’ve spent 30 years in healthcare, working with clinicians and supporting patients and families around surgery and recovery. That work has taken me from hospitals and skilled nursing facilities into people’s homes, where I’ve seen how much the right help can affect daily life.

Responsibilities at Kai

My role at Kai is business development. I work with our referral partners, caregivers, and clients’ family members to make the process of arranging care at home easier to navigate.

Care expectations

Meeting someone’s daily needs is essential. How we treat them while doing it matters too. I want each interaction with a caregiver to be kind and respectful, with the person’s dignity in mind.

Family and community

I was raised in Hawaiʻi, with kūpuna who helped teach me kindness, respect, and integrity. Those lessons shape how I work. Caring for older adults here is a chance to give back to the community that helped raise me.

Advice for families

Caring for someone’s loved one is a serious responsibility. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with our clients and their families. I want you to feel comfortable telling us what matters to you and what you’re worried about.

Our company

Kai provides personal care, companionship, assistance with daily routines, and respite for family caregivers. We serve people who want to remain at home, with support that respects their preferences and the way they like to live.

As an independently owned Oʻahu company, we work with families and referral partners to understand what help is needed and whether our services are a good fit. Our goal is dependable care from people clients can get to know.

Why this work matters to us

Shawn has seen families struggle to find home care throughout his healthcare career. When his mother needed help after a long hospital stay, his own family faced the same difficulty.

That experience informs his work at Kai. He works with referral partners, caregivers, and families to make arranging care easier, with attention to the person receiving it.

Our approach to care

We want clients to have dependable help from a caregiver they can get to know. That starts with choosing capable people who want to do this work, and it includes paying attention to consistency in who provides care.

We also value the time a caregiver takes to sit with someone, look through old photos, and talk story. Along with practical help, we want clients to feel comfortable with the person in their home and to be treated with dignity and kindness.
